    South of Middle America is the continent of South America, extending from the tropical sand beaches of Colombia to the frigid islands of southern Chile and Argentina. The region lies at the intersection of a number of tectonic plates making the region vulnerable to earthquakes and volcanoes (Figure \(\PageIndex{2}\)).
